Work Package 6

Identifying and evaluating feasible and acceptable planned and autonomous adaptations

WP Lead: University of Southampton, Emma Tompkins

WP6 identifies and evaluates the scope, types, and sustainability of adaptation options (including migration) occurring in deltas. It will focus on adaptation at the household and national level (state level for India) for delta regions, and the dynamic relationship between national policy and household adaptation. This WP assesses the implications of local adaptation choices on the effectiveness of national adaptation policies (and vice versa). WP6 will generate the first baseline assessment of observed adaptation in deltas, as well as the first systematically sampled databases of household adaptations to climate change in deltaic environments. This WP will also recommend and support the application for funding of appropriate gender-sensitive, and desirable adaptations in the delta regions. DECCMA (through WP6) will be the first project to engage stakeholders to deliver concrete proposals for adaptation finance (e.g. the Adaptation Fund) to enable deltaic regions to implement effective anticipatory gender-sensitive adaptation, specifically through Article 14f which relates to migration as adaptation.

Work Tasks:

6.1 Identify feasible and realistic planned adaptations

6.2 Social survey of autonomous adaptation at household level (with WP3)

6.3 Theorise interactions between autonomous household adaptation and planned adaptation

6.4 Develop criteria to evaluate successful adaptation

6.5 Evaluate the success of alternative adaptation options

6.6 Support the implementation of stakeholder-led adaptation policy choices
