Designing More Than Talk Website

It is important that any home page is instantly recognisable. Informs new visitors about its purpose and gives people something to do. (See earlier blog).

Home Page : When users enter our website they will see a video about us and introduction/explanation about who we are.  The Home Page will include three case studies associated with this social media site. The purpose of the case studies is to help new users understand how MoreThan Talk aims to help someone about to travel.

On the top of the home page screen, there are registration and entry buttons. When they use these buttons, they will login and access to website.

When a user clicks on “Sign-up” button, they will be taken to this next window. They may register using their Facebook, Google account or with their email address.  We want to encourage linkage between different social networks.  It is a method of simplifying signing up and may, with judicial cross promotion attract others to join MoreThan Talk.

When we are setting up a new account, after they click on “Login” button, where they are asked to confirm some basic information and create a username and a password.  Completion of this screen will lead to a confirmation e-mail being sent to e-mail address to ensure that the owner has indeed sought to sign on.

After registration, they will be encouraged to fill in this form.  It provides the database with some very basic information about the new user in terms of where they are located and the languages they speak etc.

We have made an effort to allow users to control the way their data is shared across the network.  So at every stage, users must feel in control of the way personal data is shared.

That said, users are encouraged to create and maintain a personal page. They enter data into a form which is then translated into the page of information.

The ‘visible to everyone’ button is again about giving the user control over whether their personal data is made visible to everyone or just their friends.

They may upload a personal picture and anything else they want to manage their personal and public profile page.

The form would generate a Profile Page.  In this instance the user uploaded a cartoon pictorial avatar.  Undoubtedly the site would need to expand in order to allow users to upload photo galleries – hopefully with the ability to easily tag by location as well as key word.  Latest news updates would be automatically posted on ‘friends’ pages.

Eventually we would want to develop interest groups.  So if someone was thinking about visiting Paris, they could join the group of people who have already been visiting Paris and discover their conversation threads.

Separate to the personal information, users are encouraged to record where they are wishing to visit.  The visit could be for leisure, but also for business or study.  The scope of the query is recorded on the form below.  Here the user can identify the general areas of information they are seeking to understand.

The form is sent to the database as a query and the user database is searched for matches.

Hopefully there will be some fellow MoreThan Talk users who can offer support and information about the desired destination.  The system will return the match form below.

For example, when a user filled in the form wishing to visit Mexico City, the screen below shows something about three people who could provide a useful point of contact.  It is then up to the visitor to decide how to proceed.  They could view the public profiles to find out more about them.  They could then decide to message one person, or all three.

Therefore, they will then be in contact with people living in a different part of the world who should be able to give them useful information.
