The Ethical Design Manifesto

We came across this lovely manifesto for creating new technologies in the digital age.  It is the creation of two designers, Laura and Aral from Ind.ie who are “striving for social justice in the digital age”.  They are passionate that all technological developments (and this would include social media networks) should incorporate three essential features.  First it should be respectful of human privacy and work to reduce inequality.  Second the design of the technology must be functional, robust and reliable.  In other words it should do what it claims to do, do it easily and do it well.  Finally, our interactions with technology should be beautiful, intuitive and in short delightful!  It should be a pleasure to use the technology because it is so easy to do.

Laura and Aral have created this poster which they want designers and other interested parties to share.  We are pleased to include it in the blog.

Although the manifesto lacks detail (perhaps the best manifestos are not high in detail) the overarching arguments about the features of good ethical design are a useful starting point for considering how our social media network should be judged.
