Microphones

Larger CLS rooms have ‘gooseneck’ microphones (on a flexible stem) that are used to enhance your voice. There are no volume controls since the level is pre-set.

Some of the largest CLS rooms have hearing induction loops fitted, and these require the microphone to be used.

  • Use the touch-screen control panel to Activate the Microphone.
  • These microphones are very directional; they only pick up your voice when you are close to them. For best results you should bend the stem so the microphone points towards you.
  • Use the touch-screen control panel to Silence the Microphone if required; for example, if a student comes to you with a question after a lecture.
  • Some larger CLS teaching spaces also have wireless microphones; see Wireless xTag microphones for details.

All CLS rooms also have a round area microphone attached to the lectern bench that are used to record your voice using the Panopto lecture capture system.

  • These microphones are not directional and will pick up your voice if you remain within 2-3 metres of them. This gives you more freedom to move while presenting, but will produce poor-quality recordings if you move too far from them or talk while facing away (e.g. while writing on a whiteboard).
  • The recording level can be set using a control on the Panopto software.
