Journals, newspapers and magazines

During your studies, you are expected to use a variety of resources. These may include academic journals, newspapers, and magazines.

Newspapers and magazines

When you enrol on your course, you will be able to access 1000s of online newspapers and magazines, both contemporary and historic. You will also be able to read our hard copy magazines.

Newspapers and magazines are useful for understanding current events and trends. Some have cultural or political biases, so it’s important to read a variety of publications, alongside other resources.

 Academic journals

A journal is an academic publication. Like magazines they are published regularly throughout the year. This may be e.g. monthly, biannually (twice a year), quarterly (January, April, July, October). We subscribe to both online and hard copy journals.

Articles are written by researchers as a way to share their research, or examine and analyse a specific, narrow topic. Many are peer reviewed, which means they are checked by other academics or experts on the subject, before they are published. However, it’s still important to evaluate and question everything you read.
