During the first weekend, we had one of our whole day trips. After breakfast, we got on the bus and headed towards Quanzhou, one of the most popular cities in Fujian province. This harbour is famous for its red buildings and diverse ethnic origins, which is reflected in a number of different temples. After arriving, we visited one of the main touristic attractions: a Buddhist Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple. Continue reading →

My trip to Xiamen, China has been one of most culturally enriching and eye-opening experiences of my life. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about China’s economy and how the city of Xiamen has played a large role in China’s rapid growth. I found the culture to be very fascinating and it was great to experience this first hand through activities such as tea and dumpling making, and visits to temples and local businesses. 2019 Xiamen Summer School was an excellent opportunity to understand the Chinese Economy and Chinese culture. It was also a unique opportunity to meet other students at Xiamen University and work alongside them. When I landed in China, I was surprised by the infrastructure. There were tall, beautiful buildings alongside clean, highly maintained roads. I was also stunned by the number of stares and pictures we had encountered on the first day and throughout the two weeks. Continue reading →

Beautiful scenery, unforgettable memories, and two incredible weeks in China! Xiamen Summer School was the trip of a lifetime, an experience which taught me about the Chinese economy and Chinese culture. My first impression of China, and Xiamen more specifically, was the unbearable heat and humidity – something many of us are not used to back in England. Nonetheless, this was expected as I had learnt that China is a hot country. Continue reading →

My two weeks in Xiamen was an experience never to be forgotten. My first impressions of Xiamen, from the drive from the airport to Xiamen University campus, was that, this is not the China that is portrayed on T.V. I was taken aback at how modern, clean and structured this city is. The weather was absolutely scorching, but I got used to it, as time went on. I really enjoyed learning about the Chinese culture and economy. It was a lovely insight in to the Chinese world. Continue reading →

This picture for me illustrates my newly found perception of China following a short trip to Beijing. It’s a country which is not scared, or ashamed of its one-party system. Instead, as pointed out by many people I met on this trip, the one-party system allows the government to get things done. Continue reading →

I feel that this photo embraces my time in China the most, as it portrays my happiness in the moment, surrounded by my new friends and a different environment. The photo mirrors me taking a step out of my comfort zone and trying something new in life; mixing feelings of happiness, fascination and sweatiness. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in China which showed me the different lifestyle people live on the other side of the world, the different food they eat and their perception on the world. The CUEB Beijing summer school was a life-changing experience, which certainly exceeded my expectations. Not only did I learn at a university abroad, but I also experienced a new culture in a new country, which was eye opening and enriching. Through my journey on this summer school, I made some amazing friends and together we shared some unforgettable memories. My personal highlight was The Great Wall of China seeing as it is considered to be one of the great wonders of the world. Continue reading →

Personally, I believe this photo is rather good summation of China. In the forefront is a traditional, small, Chinese street – called a Hutong. In the background is a soviet-style apartment block which is common in modern China. Though Soviet-style and governed by the communist party, China is far from communist; the shops in the foreground which highlight China’s open, market-economy demonstrate this contradiction. The Great Wall of China was an experience that we all looked forward to, and didn’t disappoint. Being at the end of the trip, it was also an opportunity to reflect on our time in China, while taking in the scenery. With new knowledge, great memories and amazing new friends; summer school provided much more than expected. All the staff involved, from both Universities, made it possible for the trip to be what it was. I couldn’t recommend this opportunity enough. Continue reading →
