This picture for me illustrates my newly found perception of China following a short trip to Beijing. It’s a country which is not scared, or ashamed of its one-party system. Instead, as pointed out by many people I met on this trip, the one-party system allows the government to get things done. China has managed to develop its infrastructure and cities to meet the changing social demands faced by the country, all this is being done within Xi Jinping’s policy of environmental protection at the forefront of all development projects. While I may look at China and its ability to get things done through the one-party system, and contrast this to the current Brexit deadlock in Britain, I would still not wish such a system to operate in the United Kingdom. My new perception of China is more positive than before, the one-party system may only last as long as growth exists in China, but it is a system which is allowing China to become world leaders in several categories such as climate diplomacy.
