Why Gamification?

Gamification is a technique proven to motivate and engage users by leveraging the desires that exist
in all of us for community, feedback, achievement and reward (Bunchball, 2017). Football in general already uses some forms of gamification such as yellow and red cards which are a way of penalising players.

Achievement Badges

To make SoccerNet more engaging to its users, achievement badges will be introduced to reward users who are frequently using the platform or perform well during games. Some of those achievement badges can be:

  • Top Scorer
  • Player of the Month/Year
  • Organiser of the Month/Year
  • Top contributor (for users who are very active in forums)

In addition to rewards, gamification techniques can be used to ensure that users comply with the rules of SoccerNet. For example, users who use abusive language will get a yellow card. If they repeat the same mistake, they will be banned from using the platform.

A profile completion status bar is another gamification technique which can help and guide users to use most if not all of the application’s features making the most out of it.
