Maria was born in Tamaulipas, Mexico where she studied for a BEng in Electronic Engineering and MEng in Electrical Engineering at the Institute of Technology of Madero City. She is currently a PhD student at the University of Southampton in the Electrical Power Engineering (EPE) research group. Her research project is related to the optimisation of offshore wind farm power cables (by the application of wind farm over-planning) while estimating and managing the risk of cable overheating.

Her personal interests include activities such as football, yoga, Latin dance (salsa, cumbia, bachata) and Lindy Hop (Swing dance). She loves reading books and currently she is reading a book by Norman Doidge called “The Brain Changes Itself”, which explains the concept of neuroplasticity through real stories of people who were able to recover mobility after strokes, raised their IQ or overcame emotional disorders. Maria recently adopted a plant-based diet after watching a documentary called “What the Health”. She started researching about the unsustainability of the livestock industry and the harm that it does to our planet. Maria loves animals and believes that personality differences do exist among different types of species other than humans.
