Work package 1
Community and stakeholder engagement

We worked with Community Advisory Boards (CAB) in Uganda, Ghana and Ethiopia to ensure that community engagement is the foundation of our research in all work packages.
We have trained:
- 6 CAB members in Uganda
- 36 CAB members in Ghana
- 12 CAB members in Ethiopia
Through our CABs, we make sure that dialogue and feedback between research teams and community stakeholder groups at critical stages in the project implementation process for all work packages is maintained.
We have also set up a National Project Steering Committee, providing advice and support to country teams in Ghana, Ethiopia and Uganda. These committees are multidisciplinary and include frontline health workers, technical experts from Ministries of Health and UN agencies/WHO, and civil society practitioners.
Political Economy Analysis
We engaged maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) stakeholders at community, sub-national and national level to understand political and economic factors that help or hinder MPDSR implementation. We identified and mapped key stakeholders in MPDSR implementation in each country to understand the roles they play, and the power they hold in the MPDSR process. We conducted a baseline PEA in year one of the project.
We continue to engage in ‘everyday PEA’ through our interactions with CAB members and National Project Steering Committee members, to examine the changes in the socio-political landscape as we implement the different work packages. This allows us to identify opportunities that we can use on to optimise MPDSR implementation.
