MRC LEC researchers contribute to ground-breaking survey of global variation in diabetes diagnosis and prevalence

Professors Cyrus Cooper, Elaine Dennison and Caroline Fall have recently contributed to a major study of global variation in diabetes diagnosis and prevalence based on fasting glucose and haemoglobin A1c, as part of the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration.

The study, published recently in Nature Medicine, used data from 117 population-based studies and quantified the prevalence of diagnosed diabetes in different world regions.

The team developed prediction equations for estimating the probability of elevated HbA1c, facilitating appropriate allocation of resource in lower-middle-income countries where laboratory assays may not be widely available. This is one of the most comprehensive global studies of diabetes undertaken to date, and will directly inform clinical care and policy internationally.
