Found cities, Lost objects: Women in the city

An Arts Council Collection Touring Exhibition

Curated by Lubina Himid CBE

3 Feb – 6 May 2023

Curated by Turner Prize winner and internationally renowned artist Lubaina Himid, CBE, Found Cities, Lost Objects invites us, through the works of female contemporary artists, to consider the experiences of women in the city.

With works from the Arts Council Collection and Southampton City Art Gallery’s collection, this collaborative exhibition encourages us to bring our own experiences of the urban environment. It acknowledges the privileges which allow some women to roam freely, while also considering the boundaries that may curb the experiences of others.

On display as part of Southampton’s iteration of this exhibition is a selection of photographs by Magda Segal, which were commissioned by the Southampton Women’s Survey and previously shown at the Gallery in 2000. These photographs recorded daily life and the diversity of young women’s lifestyles in Southampton at the turn of the Millennium.

Additional artists featured include Lisa Milroy, Magda Stawarska-Beavan, Elizabeth Wright, Cornelia Parker, susan pui san lok and Helen Cammock.
