Meeting 31/01/23: Digital literacy expectations

Today we had our first meeting of 2023 and we started with Dr. John Woollard from the School of Education in the University of Southampton talking about ‘Digital literacy expectations of tutors and students in Higher Education’.

Dr. Woollard talked about the meaning of learning and e-learning, and Gilly Salmon’s Five Stage Model of E-learning (here’s a short video explaining her e-learning model, and the importance of considering the social aspects of learning. In his talk, he also discussed some key constructs around e-learning:

  • Digital natives vs immigrants (Prensky, 2001 Part 1 and Part 2)
  • TAM: Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989)
  • TPACK: Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Mishra and Koehler, 2006)
  • TRA: Theory of Reasoned Action (Fishbein and Ajzen, 1970, 1980)
  • UTAUT: Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (Venkatesh et al, 2003)
  • SAMR: Substitution Augmentation Modification and Redefinition (Puentedura)

Dr. Woollard then provided a definition to digital literacy from the Royal Society Report ‘Shut down or restart? The way forward for computing in UK schools‘.

We then had a discussion on ‘How do we improve technology enhanced teaching and learning?’ and participants created lists and mind maps on what e-students need to know in order to be digitally literate at higher educational level and here’s what they produced:
