Meeting 23/06/2020: Designing video for learning. What does the research tell us?

Hello PEGasus team! We had our last meeting of 2019/2020 today and what a way to wrap up the term. We had Dr. John Schulz talking about the research on the use and creating of videos for learning.

Dr. John Schulz is a Principal Teaching Fellow within the Southampton Education School and Director of the SEds Video & Digital Media Studio. John teaches on a wide variety of MSc and Doctoral programmes within the school, in the areas of eLearning, Education Management and Research Methods, and developed the online Masters programme for the School of Education.

In this session, John covered the key research on using and designing video for learning, from the pre-web early views to more current literature, and how far we’ve gone on video for learning production and understanding.

John showed that videos can be a great tool for learning. They can provide content and information, illustrate a concept or principle, present alternative viewpoints, apply content to real-world applications, serve as a stimulus of a learning activity (Berk, 2009), can evoke affective and emotive responses, positively affect student behaviour and outcomes (Kay, 2012), to name a few.

Video can take a variety of forms. They can be used to replace or substitute synchronous teaching, supplement or augment existing learning methods, and can involve creative use on the teachers’ and students’ side. John also looked at transmission and integration principles, different models used in video creation, and the research into production values and cognitive load.

Overall, a great overview of the research and different aspects that are part of designing videos for learning purposes. The session also raised some very interesting questions and highlighted the further need for qualitative pedagogical and multicultural research. If you’ve missed the session, you can catch-up with the recording here and download the slides below.
