Cochlear Implants International

Cochlear implants are hugely successful in restoring hearing for patients with severe to profound deafness. CI surgery is safe, however trauma to the ear during surgery could potentially affect the balance organs. This study used new methods to explore balance function before and after cochlear implant surgery. It was only in a small sample of 7 patients, but in some cases we saw changes in balance function resulting from surgery. The clinical implications of findings are not yet clear and need more research. For patients who have vestibular problems, such methods may help to determine the better ear to implant.
