Workshop call for papers: Political Theology – Jihadism in the Age of Globalisation and its parallels in the West

11 June 2026, 10:00-17:00

Avenue Campus (room: B65A/2251),

University of Southampton

This hybrid workshop is organised within the framework of the Centre for Imperial and Postcolonial Studies (CIPS), based in the History Department at the University of Southampton.

We invite scholars and researchers to contribute to an interdisciplinary workshop examining jihadism within the broader context of globalisation, with particular attention to its potential parallels with Western militant movements such as the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and left-wing organisations in 1960s–70s Europe.

The workshop seeks to explore themes including (but not limited to): the transnationalisation of political violence, ideological justifications of militancy, comparative radicalisation processes, and the shifting boundaries between “terrorism,” insurgency, and political resistance in different historical and geopolitical contexts.

We welcome proposals from a range of disciplines, including history, political science, sociology, religious studies, and international relations.

If you are interested in presenting a paper on any aspect related to the theme, I would be grateful if you could send a brief paragraph outlining your proposal to:
