Southampton Celebrates – 16-24 February 2018: Full Programme

As part of Southampton Celebrates, John Hansard Gallery and City Eye will be presenting Sampler from Friday 16 February – Saturday 24 February, giving everyone a flavour of what’s to come when the Gallery formally reopens later this year.

Nuffield Southampton Theatres will also be hosting a full day of activities for all ages in their new venue, NST City, on Saturday 17 February.

Friday 16 January

Join us on the 16 February as a week-long celebration of art and culture kicks off, signalling the launch of Studio 144. University of Southampton’s John Hansard Gallery, City Eye and Nuffield Southampton Theatres’ will all be opening the doors to their new homes in Guildhall Square.

A traditional celebratory dance and martial arts performance for John Hansard Gallery and City Eye by the Waterside Lion Dance club in conjunction with the Chinese Association of Southampton, to bring good luck to Studio 144 in celebration of the Chinese New Year celebrations of the Year of the Earth Dog.

As part of Tate Exchange, DfDN is a project that benefits young people from the city, giving them an opportunity to re-engage with learning and take part in workshops. The project aims to creatively explore issues of youth crime from the perspective of young people, teachers, youth offending service workers and artists.

Over the past 12 months, Southampton’s experimental poetry series, Entropics, has hosted some of the most interesting contemporary poets and writers from around the UK and beyond. Holly Pester is a poet and multidisciplinary writer working through archives and written histories, with gossip, radical tales and dream logic. Pester is lecturer in Poetry and Performance at University of Essex. John Hansard Gallery’s Writer in Residence Iain Morrison will be participating as part of the event.

SWEET TOOTH marks the culmination of five years’ research by Mitchener into our love of sugar and the historical links between Britain and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

11:00-14:00 SWEET TOOTH: Perspectives
Meeting Room, John Hansard Gallery

The series of conversations exploring the cross-disciplinary nature of SWEET TOOTH will include a dialogue between Elaine Mitchener and composer Dr Drew Crawford (University of Southampton), examining the work’s structural improvisational methodology, as well as the historical consultant for the piece, Dr Christer Petley (University of Southampton), in conversation with Dr Pritipuspa Mishra (University of Southampton) to explore the historical material within the performance. The event will conclude with a panel discussion chaired by Don John, founder of Southampton Black History Month.
