Are you having trouble ‘getting to grips with music’ as a hearing aid user or someone with a cochlear implant?

By Sarah Smith

Are you having trouble ‘getting to grips with music’ as a hearing aid user or someone with a cochlear implant? AIS has produced a useful list of ideas to help. You can download it from their website. They have also provided a computer program called More from Music. (This isn’t available on a phone or tablet and a new app is being developed).

Bluetooth can be brilliant when listening on your own but doesn’t suit every situation.
-One thing that helped me is thinking of different situations when music is important to me and ways to still enjoy it .
-Strong rhythms are wonderful.
-I can’t play in a group much now but when the opportunity turns up very occasionally to play African drums or gamelan for example  I seize it .
-My ‘Desert Island Discs’ have changed and developed in the 9 years since I had my implant. At first every piece was just noise. As time has gone on I have found music has developed. I like new sounds and types of music. It has been great fun.
-Have you got any hints and tips to share, questions to ask or stories to tell about how you enjoy music?
