Periodic structures have been designed to exhibit elastic wave propagation band gap with various applications in passive noise and vibration control. However, the manufacturing process causes material and geometry uncertainties that can drastically change their attenuation performance. In this work, a spectral and wave and finite element based approach is proposed such that a wave-like interpretation can be derived for nearly-periodic structures. Results shown that even for slowly varying properties, wave reflections take place at critical sections. The findings of this study highlight the importance of the robust design optimization of phononic crystals and metamaterials against material and geometrical uncertainties.
