Smart Materials and Structures

Acoustic black holes (ABHs) are lightweight structural features that slow down and absorb incident waves. They are particularly effective at dampening high frequency vibration and can be embedded into plates. This paper introduces the reader to the idea of a hybrid vibration control solution, where active control has been integrated into ABHs. An active vibration control strategy is used to control low frequency vibration whilst the passive damping of the ABHs provides attenuation at higher frequencies. It is shown that these active ABHs provide significant damping over a broad frequency spectrum and performance advantages over purely active or passive configurations.
