The Hertfordshire Bone Study

February 2017 marked the start of another exciting phase of the Hertfordshire Cohort Study. In 2011-12, Dr Mark Edwards conducted some ground-breaking work which used special scanners to investigate the structure of bone and muscle in the arms and legs (pQCT and HRpQCT). Five years on and we are repeating those scans; this will provide invaluable information not just about the structure of bones but also how that structure changes over time in later life. So far we have recruited over 100 participants to this follow-up study and hope to have many more visit our clinic before the end of the study in early autumn.

We are thoroughly enjoying conducting the study and are hugely grateful to our colleagues at the MRC Elsie Widdowson Laboratory in Cambridge for hosting us. Most of all, we remain ever grateful to our Hertfordshire participants for their ongoing participation in the Hertfordshire Cohort Study.
