The Hampshire Archives, Winchester

Yesterday I accompanied Halina, Matthew and Lucy on a trip to Winchester, to conduct more research into Swaythling during the Great War. We looked at a variety of topics, such as the Remount Depot, the US Naval Air Service, and American soldiers in Southampton.

As is typically the case with archival visits, there were a couple of dead ends, but also some really exciting leads! For example, church records from 1918 described how Hampshire celebrated Independence Day, and a pictorial in 1919 depicted the establishment of an American YMCA near the Bargate!

We are very much looking forward to collating all the information into something helpful and informative. Watch this space!

Research trip to the Hampshire Archives!
