2. Terrestrial Laser Scanning

The aim of this part of the course is to introduce you to LiDAR, specifically ground based LiDAR systems also known as Terrestrial Laser Scanners (TLS). The principles of operation will be introduced and some example applications highlighted. Finally you will have the opportunity to view some sample TLS data using specialist viewing software.

Introduction

Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is a specific type of ground based LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) system which uses LASER (Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) light. This section of the course will outline the fundamentals of LiDAR systems, prior to introducing TLS and some applications. The unit concludes with the opportunity for exploration of some real data captured with a TLS, which must be viewed using specialist software (which will be provided for you in a practical download file).
