Assignment-2

Assignment 2: “An investigation of the difference between ASTER derived elevation estimates and those provided by the widely used SRTM DEM product”

The practical involves the development of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) data.  After creating your DEM’s from ASTER images as described in the practical(found in the Blackboard Assignment 2 Page), use these results to investigate the elevation differences between the ASTER and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEMs. You will need to download the relevant SRTM data of the same area and co-register/reproject (e.g. using ArcGIS) it to the ASTER DEM prior to their comparison and analysis.  The assignment should be written in the style of a journal paper (refer to the Nikolakopoulos et al., 2006 paper to get an idea of the type of analysis and content of a research paper in this area, using other approaches(other than those in the paper) are also welcome). The assignment should contain:

1) An abstract

2) Introduction detailing requirements and advantages of satellite derived DEMs, their limitations etc.

3) Data and methods: A detailed description of the data and methods applied to produce ASTER DEM and reference to the method used to produce SRTM DEM.

4) Results: this should contain an analysis of the DEMs, the difference DEM and any relevant statistics.

5) Discussion of the results, limitations of the methodology etc.

6) Conclusion

7) Reference list

There is a maximum word count of 2000 for this report (not including figures, tables or the reference list).
