Remote sensing techniques can be usefully applied to situations where plant, soil and water types need to be identified. By use of multispectral analysis information about a plants age, chlorophyll content, leaf type, water content can be estimated. Soil type can be classified in remote sensing by general reflectance, it is affected by organic content, smoothness and water content. Direct remote sensing of soils is often difficult because of plant cover shading the soil. Remotely sensed images of water are affected by bottom type in clear, shallow water. Elsewhere, particulate non organic and dissolved tannin affect the colour sensed.
