This paper reviews potential applications of active sound control in and around buildings. Active control is particularly efficient at low frequencies, when the dimensions are comparable with the acoustic wavelength, and so complements more traditional passive control methods. Some applications have been demonstrated at scale, including the control of noise at source on construction machines and active acoustic barriers, and some require further work to establish their commercial feasibility. This includes the active control of noise transmitted through naturally ventilated open windows, which is particularly interesting due to the potential saving in energy for air conditioning in tropical climates.
