My name is Matthew and I am entering my third year as a Modern History and Politics student at the University of Southampton this September.
My interest in the project was first piqued because I live in Swaythling itself. For me, history has always been a means to connect the past to the present. A better understanding of the past, particularly in the area I now call home, will help shape my perceptions of the area today. I’m particularly interested in the First World War because so much of it became the foundations on which today’s current events were formed. I hope that Swaythling’s role in the Great War will be brought to help the community understand its roots as well as foster a worthwhile connection between town and university.
