Here\u00a0she offers an account of the main\u00a0research themes and issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Propaganda conceived for distribution via a medium such as the pictorial poster creates a body of artwork that can be productively examined from both aesthetic and political perspectives. When this artwork is primarily restricted to conflict propaganda from the second decade of the twentieth century, the temporal and contextual considerations assist in focussing the poster\u2019s role as a functional object, not only within a propaganda campaign but also within the wider visual ecology of an era. These early years of the twentieth century \u2013 encompassing as they do the conflict of World War I \u2013 witnessed the emergence of the pictorial poster as a useful tool for the state to employ in the distribution of propagandist messaging. Allied with this is how propaganda as a concept was beginning to be considered in the context that we now understand, and both these considerations contribute to why this particular period of history is ripe for a productive analysis of this genre of artwork.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2490\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/Step-into-your-Place-Artist-Unknown-1915.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2490 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/Step-into-your-Place-Artist-Unknown-1915-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"'Step into your Place' - Artist Unknown - 1915.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;Step into your Place&#8217; &#8211; Artist Unknown &#8211; 1915.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the pictorial poster to operate as an effective means of propaganda distribution, however, the propagandist requires compositional elements that incorporate constructs considered to be capable of attracting the individual within the mass. If a particular construct is isolated and subsequently utilised in the artwork\u2019s composition, its manifestation demonstrates the potential for its use as a mechanism by which the imagery can be unpacked. The concept of a propagandist promotion of an alternate reality worth striving for as a challenge to a current real \u2013 and the prospective movement from one to the other \u2013 can be figuratively as well as literally conveyed via an apposite construct\u2019s employment as a pictorial trope. Taking these factors into consideration, therefore, the visual construct deemed to represent \u201cmovement\u201d \u2013 and not only movement, but movement at its most beautiful, thereby forming a focus for the attraction of the viewer \u2013 is the serpentine curve that in 1745 William Hogarth scribed on a paint palette and titled \u2018THE LINE OF BEAUTY\u2019 (Hogarth, 1997 p6).<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_2487\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2487\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/William-Hogarth-The-Line-of-Beauty-1745-Detail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2487 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/William-Hogarth-The-Line-of-Beauty-1745-Detail-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"William Hogarth - 'The Line of Beauty' 1745 [Detail]\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/William-Hogarth-The-Line-of-Beauty-1745-Detail-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/William-Hogarth-The-Line-of-Beauty-1745-Detail-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/William-Hogarth-The-Line-of-Beauty-1745-Detail-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/wsapgr1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/486\/2014\/10\/William-Hogarth-The-Line-of-Beauty-1745-Detail.jpg 1011w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">William Hogarth &#8211; &#8216;The Line of Beauty&#8217; 1745 [Detail]<\/figcaption><\/figure>In concentrating on the poster within the wider genre of early twentieth century visual conflict propaganda, and by creating new associations with both aesthetic and metaphoric concepts pertaining to Hogarth\u2019s chosen \u201cline\u201d, <em>Lines of Beauty: Propaganda, the Poster, and the Pictorial Trope<\/em> as a body of research attempts to articulate how each contributory element within the artwork\u2019s construction \u2018respectively influences the identity and the economies of the other\u2019, thereby providing \u2018a model by which to focus and rethink\u2019 these relationships (Ostrow, 2005 p226). In this way, the <em>line of beauty<\/em> serves as both cause and effect of the process by which the relationships are reconsidered, generating the potential to provoke an innovative discourse as to the prospective impact of the whole upon the visual culture field.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hogarth, W.
