This work stream investigates the drivers of home-based businesses and self-employment (HBBs), the reasons for the growth of HBBs and how these relate to wider social and economic processes and concepts.

• Has home-based self-employment increased in some countries and areas because more and more women find this an appropriate way to combine family and work?
• How inclusive is home-based self-employment?
• Who is potentially excluded and why?

Longitudinal analysis, which will draw on Household Panel Studies in Germany and the UK, will provide insights into the role of social inequality, labour market disadvantage and wellbeing for becoming a self-employed homeworker and into household decisions and risk strategies (e.g. income pooling) associated with home-based self-employment.
