Networks & activity spaces

This part of the project addresses the local embeddedness of home-based businesses and self-employment (HBBs) through social networking and everyday mobility.

  • How locally ‘anchored’ and dependent on neighbourhood resources are HBBs compared to other population groups?
  • What role do personal networks in the neighbourhood versus more distant networks and virtual networking play for HBBs?
  • What new spaces of economic activity have emerged through home-based self-employment?
  • What is the relationship between personal embeddedness and embeddedness of economic activity?

These questions will be addressed in research in urban areas in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany.

Primary data collection in the UK will employ GPS and mobile app data.

The case studies in the Netherlands and Germany will be conducted in collaboration with partners at the ILS Dortmund and Utrecht University
