Channels

Communication is the key. WatchTogether will connect with users via many channels. First of all, media is the primary tool since the company aims to create as high awareness as possible. Advertisements both online and offline will be used. For offline, TV and billboard in high traffic area would help create awareness for WatchTogether. Secondly, social media is not possible to be missed as well. Facebook, Instagram, Youtube will be the main communication channel which WatchTogether will update the information about movie and trends to the fans and followers.

Moreover, e-mail advertisements will help WatchTogether create and maintain a close relationship with customers. The customer will get the benefit of getting information regarding movies. It will help maintain interaction within the community. Users can give an evaluation of the service, which is great for the company: the client’s feedback can be used to improve the service. The application is one of the primary platforms to provide the service that can be supported to watch a film by using a mobile phone, tablet. etc.

Customer Segment

The company aims to find the particular moment for the viewers that can spend time together with family. According to the Communication Market Report (2017), 68 percent of people agreed that watching movie and TV show can bring the family stick together. It would be great for the whole society to realize how to make the family getting closer to each other.

WatchTogether has a high potential numbers of the clients in different customers segment, which are teenagers, married couples and family with children. Since teenagers consume lots of internet and also online activities such music, game, watch the movie that our website provided; thus, this group are expected to be the big fan of WatchTogether.

For the married couple, this activity is one of the particular moment that must spend the time together. However, the company is mainly to focus on family with children since we are wanted to see the whole family spend their time to watch the movie together.

WatchTogether provides not only a space for watching the movie, TV shows together but also a room for corporate business communication. The development of technology makes our life more convenience. Thus, WatchTogether is one the best choices to get both happiness and doing the business conference at the same time.

Value Proposition

WatchTogether provides an easy to use, high-quality space for watching movies, TV series, or any other type of video to its users. We would like to improve communication among film watchers and recreate the social experience of sitting down together in the same room to watch TV, even though our users would not be next to each other. This is done by synchronising the video player of choice on the computer of each user, such that if someone hits play or pause, it is replicated on everyone else’s screen. Nowadays, it is quite hard to find a service as our company offers, with the option for a high level of support and flexibility. This is the competitive advantage for WatchTogether.

All the film which are watched via WatchTogether are able to watch on tablet, TV, mobile phone, desktop, laptop, etc. WatchTogether is able to use the application as long as possible since the company does not limit the time of usage. Furthermore, there will be no advertisements shown during the screening.

CANVAS

The Canvas Business Model is used to analyse the business and aim to make WatchTogether to become a dominant player in the market. The model consists of nine parts which are the value proposition, customer segments, channels, cost structure, customer relationships, revenue streams, key partners, key activities, and key resources.

Additionally, this model will help all investors gain a better understanding of the company’s fixed cost and variable cost. Thus, fixed cost can be managed and reduced as much as possible.

The below visual sums up all the individual parts. Details for each part will be discussed later in this blog.

Similar Tools: Media Player Synchronisation

One interesting tool we found in our research was Syncplay.

Similarly to Rabb.it, it uses Rooms to bring a group of users together. However, instead of streaming the video online, it is an add-on application that works together with your media player of choice by synchronising the play/pause and seeking actions. All users must set up Syncplay on their personal computers. Once they have all joined the same room, then whenever one of them takes one of those actions on their media player, the same action is replicated on everybody else’s computers (e.g. when someone hits play, everyone’s video starts playing at the same time).

Syncplay is very useful for couples or a small number of friends who are apart from each other, but want to watch something privately. An initial set-up needs to be done in order to use the application, and the video file of interest has to be obtained and available on each user’s personal computer.

This makes it infeasible, or at least very inconvenient, to host an event within a group or a community. It’s difficult to make an open, social experience out of something that requires a name to be passed around and, more importantly, a specific file to be made available to use on your computer. There isn’t a way to post a link that will allow other users to join immediately, in a sort of “pick up and play” kind of way that Rabb.it aims for. While Syncplay’s method of synchronising the video is interesting, the general feel of using it is one of a “closed”, private experience.

Another point worth noting is that the only means of communications between users in a room is a chat box, with messages also appearing in the top right of the video, in a style not unlike that of subtitles. There is no option for video or voice calls, so users would have to use a third party application to enable that.

A big advantage Syncplay has over Rabb.it is that the video can be of high quality and still play reliably well, because no internet bandwidth is required to stream the video to all the machines. If you can watch HD or Blu-ray videos on your computer, then you can watch them through Syncplay. No internet subscriptions are required either, and the video can be maximised to cover the entire screen if the user so wishes.

Drawbacks of Syncplay and the method it uses:
– prior set-up required: every user needs to have the Syncplay application installed and set up, and the video has to be selected through the application by every user.
– video file required: every user requires a copy of the video file available on their personal computer.

 

Similar Tools: Social Streaming Websites

There are several websites available which allow you to stream videos from YouTube or subscription-based online video services, such Netflix or Crunchyroll. One such website is Rabb.it.

Rabb.it is split into chat rooms. One user acting as the host is in control of what is being streamed.Rooms can be made to be public, locked, or locked to all but the host’s friends. For someone to join a locked room, they need to follow an invitation link (usually given to them by the host).

Once ready, hosts can select the video, and can play and pause it whenever they wish. The video will begin for the rest of the users too, and everyone will be watching the same video being synchronously streamed through the virtual machine controlled by the host and visible by everyone.

Rabb.it is a nice tool for getting online communities more engaged. Many people like to watch TV, so Rabb.it can be really good for those who enjoy spending time online with other people. It is especially useful for hosting events, as those invited only need to click the link and they can start already start watching. The easy set up is very user friendly.

However, there are some drawbacks to a system like rabb.it:
– unavailable videos: what if you want to watch something that is not available on any of the streaming websites?
– paid subscriptions: a 3rd party paid subscription may be required in order to utilise some of the services
– low quality: streaming requires high internet bandwidth for everyone involved, otherwise the video could stutter or run at very low quality; also, the quality depends on what is available on the streaming platform being used.
– video cannot be maximised: the chat box is always visible on the side, as well as a control menu at the bottom of the screen

The key idea of WatchTogether is a social platform which enables users to watch videos together with families and friends in different locations by synchronized-playing the video files and to interact with each other by making comments, discussions, etc. The primary requirement for this collaborative-watching is to have the same video source with the exact time length (duration) either in physical media or digital format. It is assumed that the video files stored on each user’s local machine are obtained from legitimate source (purchase or rent if it’s copyrighted). What if the video file is a copyrighted one and is obtained unlawfully? The responsibility then falls to the user him/her self.

Economic Context

WatchTogether is an application that can be used to watch a movie, TV show, or some other kind of video in different places free of charge. Our product is an alternative way for users which is easy to use. According to the Guardian, UK economic growth is expected to slow in first few months of 2018, which leads to less consumption. People might be more concerned about spending their money, and may not be willing to. They might think twice before paying for inessential products and services. 

Thus, WatchTogether becomes a great alternative way for a customer to watch a movie, instead of purchasing a cinema movie ticket.

We are Group 5 of the COMP6217 The Science of Online Social Networks module. This blog will be used by us to post our progress in the research and development of WatchTogether, our idea for a new social networking tool.

Introducing WatchTogether

WatchTogether provides a way for people who are far apart from each other to watch TV or films together. It is a tool that synchronises a video file over the internet, enabling users to enjoy the company of their friends in an “online cinema” type of setting. We think it will help those who enjoy watching television series or films with friends or family, but whose circumstances make them only rarely be able to do so.

Maybe it is your sibling who has gone to study abroad, or a friend who has moved away and started working in another town – sometimes, life works in such a way that you end up in different locations across the world.

As is often the case, there are already websites and applications which serve a similar purpose. However, they have different purposes and have not left us entirely satisfied. The lasting impression was that something better can be done. We will look to examine some of these, in particular Rabb.it and Syncplay, and consider what makes them different, highlighting the best parts of them and how we think our idea can offer an alternative solution, as well as discuss target demographic.
