However I was surprised to find myself knowing nothing about tissue engineering until the lecture we had on it had taken place. Which was what had inspired me to do some research on the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is Tissue Engineering?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7Q3S6q97FiU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">WHAT IS TISSUE ENGINEERING<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">Falling under the field of regenerative medicine, tissue engineering bares the goal: to assemble functional constructs that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissues or whole organs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">It could potentially be used in surgeries in which necrosis (premature cell death in tissues) occurs. It has very considerable potential, for which scaffolds from human tissue are thrown away because of necrosis, and in combination with a patients own cells, could make synthesized organs that won\u2019t be rejected by the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because tissues are groups of cells grouped together, its obvious there would be certain cells needed so that tissue engineering can be brought about, the types are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-list\"><li>Adult\/fetal cells<\/li><li>Adult\/fetal stem cells<\/li><li>Pluripotent stem cells<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And these cell sources can be divided based on their origin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-list\"><li>Allogenic cells- from a human donor<\/li><li>Autogenic cells- the donor and recipient are the same<\/li><li>Syngenic cells- from an identical twin<\/li><li>Xenogenic cells- from an animal<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Allogenic cells <br>&#8211; Adult cells- currently have greatest clinical use<br>&#8211; Using fibroblasts which come from banks (of human donors) <br>&#8211; Available commercially Have a high growth potential<\/td><td>Autogenic cells <br>&#8211; Involved biopsy of cartilage (examination of sample cells from a   patient to determine presence\/extent of disease)<br>&#8211; From which chondrocytes are isolated and cultured, then implanted (with a biomaterial) back into a damaged joint to form a functional cartilage<br>&#8211;  But its controversial and has mixed results<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Syngenic cells <br>Aren\u2019t used commercially<\/td><td>Xenogenic cells<br>&#8211; Aren\u2019t used commercially at all<br>&#8211; Hybrid embryos are allowed to be created<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>Table summarizing  the 4 origins of cell sources <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"502\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/458\/2023\/03\/image-43.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/458\/2023\/03\/image-43.png 502w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/458\/2023\/03\/image-43-300x231.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>TISSUE ENGINEERING IN PRACTICE<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;A science paper published on the National Institute of health mentions: \u201ccurrently, tissue engineering plays a relatively small role in patient treatment. Supplement bladders, small arteries, skin grafts, cartilage, and even a small trachea have been implanted into patients, but the procedures are still experimental and very costly. \u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means, they have been successful in implanting small tissues into patients, however it comes at a price. On the other hand, more larger organ replacements like the heart and lungs, although have been successfully synthesized in the lab, have yet to be successful in replacing the organ in a patient. But steady progress has been made. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"461\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/458\/2023\/03\/image-45.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/458\/2023\/03\/image-45.png 461w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/458\/2023\/03\/image-45-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">From another point of view:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">A different means in which tissue engineering can provide a useful solution in is plastic surgery:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-white-background-color has-background wp-block-list\"><li>another paper published by the National Institute of Health mentions:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">\u201cAs a group, reconstructive surgeons are facing more challenging composite defects than ever before coupled with internet and media savvy patients with increasing expectation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">&nbsp;And goes on to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">\u201cAmong these approaches, the most attractive concept is tissue engineering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">&nbsp;Indicating in order to overcome the increasing expectations of patient\u2019s expectations, and the number of potential patients in the future, by using the concept of tissue engineering. They can meet these demands, and \u201crestore both form and function\u201d to the area in which surgery takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">CONCLUSION <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">To conclude, tissue engineering has brought about potential solutions to various issues in both the medical and cosmetic field. Ranging from lack of potential donors in both of these fields (which means they won\u2019t have to standby and wait for donors in transplant surgeries), to overcoming the severely high demand to of potential patients in the future expecting full restorations in reconstructive surgeries.
