As a lover of chicken nuggets, I was surprised by this, with the scientist in me concerned about the potential drop of protein ingestion. Naturally I was curious about this change,  and subsequently gained understanding of how detrimental conventional meat farming is to the environment, the harm to the animals and the cost involved. I recently attended a lecture about tissue engineering and was made aware about how it could be used to<a href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/science\/the-science-of-cultivated-meat\/#Introduction\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/science\/the-science-of-cultivated-meat\/#Introduction\"> grow meat in a laboratory <\/a>and did more research to determine whether this would be an improved method of meat farming and I believe it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\"><blockquote><p>Greenhouse gas emissions from livestock represent 14.5% of emissions<\/p><cite><em>A Global Assessment of Emissions and Mitigation Opportunities<\/em>, Food And Agriculture Organization of The United Nations (FAO),\u00a0Rome 2013.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\">The Science of Tissue Engineering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-horizontal is-content-justification-left is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-e0598304 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/cellular-tissue-engineering_key.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/cellular-tissue-engineering_key.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/cellular-tissue-engineering_key-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tissues are made up of cells and an extracellular matrix ; this is anything in a tissue not located inside a cell and is produced by the cells themselves. Tissue engineering involves combining the living component of tissues (cells)\u00a0\u00a0with a\u00a0scaffolding material for structure and then placing it in a growth media for development. There are a range of scaffolding materials available some are biodegradable and some are not. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\">Cooking 101 : How to grow your own meat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Meat sold in stores is mostly muscle tissue from the animal it&#8217;s harvested from with some fat tissue so could be grown in a tissue engineering lab.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The process begins by extracting cells from an animal, a small sample is taken from an animal under anaesthesia by a trained professional.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Myosatellite cells (multipoint muscle stem cells) can be extracted and placed in <a href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/science\/the-science-of-cultivated-meat\/deep-dive-cultivated-meat-bioprocess-design\/?_gl=1%2A1dpq8i%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2ANjUwOTI3NTA0LjE3MTEyMDk2Mjg.%2A_ga_TT1WCK8ETL%2AMTcxMTIwOTYyNi4xLjEuMTcxMTIwOTYyNi4wLjAuMA..\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/science\/the-science-of-cultivated-meat\/deep-dive-cultivated-meat-bioprocess-design\/?_gl=1%2A1dpq8i%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2ANjUwOTI3NTA0LjE3MTEyMDk2Mjg.%2A_ga_TT1WCK8ETL%2AMTcxMTIwOTYyNi4xLjEuMTcxMTIwOTYyNi4wLjAuMA..\">bioreactors<\/a> with a growth medium that mimics the natural environment the cells would experience as part of an animal (access to oxygen, nutrients and minerals need for differentiation\/growth).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes in the media composition ,usually cued by addition or activation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/advs.202102908\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/advs.202102908\">scaffolding <\/a>material, initiates the differentiation of the muscle stem cells allowing formation of skeletal muscle cells, fat cells and connective tissue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The differentiated cells are harvested, prepared and packaged before being sent off to be sold in stores.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-content-justification-center is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-94bc23d7 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/001de81a-800-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10830\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/001de81a-800-2.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/001de81a-800-2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/001de81a-800-2-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gfi.org\/science\/the-science-of-cultivated-meat\/deep-dive-cultivated-meat-bioprocess-design\/?_gl=1%2A1dpq8i%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2ANjUwOTI3NTA0LjE3MTEyMDk2Mjg.%2A_ga_TT1WCK8ETL%2AMTcxMTIwOTYyNi4xLjEuMTcxMTIwOTYyNi4wLjAuMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/bioreactor.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10849\" width=\"306\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain variables like the size of the meat being produced, the growth medium used, the number of stem cells you start with determines the time it takes for this process to occur.
