The body\u2019s&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/overview-of-the-vascular-system\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/overview-of-the-vascular-system\">vasculature<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;is complex and intricate, and serves a crucial role in keeping our organs and body alive. Additionally, Doppler Ultrasound is essential in monitoring blood flow in vessels before and after specific surgeries, including organ transplants,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/treatments\/valve-heart-surgery\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/treatments\/valve-heart-surgery\">heart-valve replacements<\/a><\/strong>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/angioplasty-and-stent-placement-for-the-heart#:~:text=Stents,like%20a%20layer%20of%20skin\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/angioplasty-and-stent-placement-for-the-heart#:~:text=Stents,like%20a%20layer%20of%20skin\">stent implantations<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">                  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/uosm2031-2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/481\/2024\/03\/MARIE-INTERVIEW-2-1.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>I was fortunate enough to talk to a Clinical Vascular Scientist about the importance of Doppler Ultrasound in her day-to-day work:<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">A significant health concern?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After speaking with Marie, I became increasingly aware of how prevalent vascular disease is in the UK, with heart and circulatory diseases causing&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/-\/media\/files\/for-professionals\/research\/heart-statistics\/bhf-cvd-statistics-england-factsheet.pdf?rev=2d0831c6ff864dd7a03bacc538f7ec86&amp;hash=6CADEADA1DC3FE52C168CE3CA20D1A8E#:~:text=Heart%20and%20circulatory%20diseases%20cause,one%20death%20every%20four%20minutes.&amp;text=Over%2039%2C000%20people%20under%20the,diseases%20(CVD)%20each%20year.\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/-\/media\/files\/for-professionals\/research\/heart-statistics\/bhf-cvd-statistics-england-factsheet.pdf?rev=2d0831c6ff864dd7a03bacc538f7ec86&amp;hash=6CADEADA1DC3FE52C168CE3CA20D1A8E#:~:text=Heart%20and%20circulatory%20diseases%20cause,one%20death%20every%20four%20minutes.&amp;text=Over%2039%2C000%20people%20under%20the,diseases%20(CVD)%20each%20year.\">26% of all deaths<\/a> <\/strong>in England. That\u2019s one death every four minutes! Vascular disease is&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17604-vascular-disease\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17604-vascular-disease\">severe<\/a> <\/strong>and can result in poor wound healing, organ damage, stroke, heart attack, and even amputation of limbs. I had a discussion with Bethany, a student nurse who recently completed a placement on a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Bethany gave me valuable insight into the negative impacts that vascular disease has on both a patient\u2019s quality of life and the NHS. I was shocked to find out that CVD-related healthcare costs amount to about<a href=\"https:\/\/ukhsa.blog.gov.uk\/2019\/02\/14\/health-matters-preventing-cardiovascular-disease\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ukhsa.blog.gov.uk\/2019\/02\/14\/health-matters-preventing-cardiovascular-disease\/\"> <strong>\u00a37.4 billion<\/strong><\/a> per year in England! However, when multiple arteries become blocked, an artery bypass graft may be performed using segments of healthy blood vessels from other parts of the body. \u201cWould tissue-engineering new blood vessels be necessary if bypass grafts are usually successful?\u201d I thought, especially when they would face a minimal risk of rejection coming from the patient themselves. After reflecting on this question, I concluded that tissue-engineered blood vessels would<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>add value if successful. Some patients don\u2019t have suitable blood vessels in other parts of the body to use in a bypass graft, and this&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strath.ac.uk\/science\/biomedicalresearchatstrathclyde\/research\/developmentoftissueengineeredbloodvesselasvascularbypassgraft\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.strath.ac.uk\/science\/biomedicalresearchatstrathclyde\/research\/developmentoftissueengineeredbloodvesselasvascularbypassgraft\/\">shortage<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;is a factor that could be overcome. Additionally, the vessel could be perfectly engineered to fit the patient and \u201cgrow\u201d as they age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">How far away are we from successful tissue engineering of blood vessels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4401266\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4401266\/\">Weinberg and Bell<\/a><\/strong><a>&nbsp;<\/a>tissue-engineered the first blood vessel in 1986 using collagen, smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts.
