Our events provide support, guidance and professional development for both female students and staff in science, engineering and technology at the University of Southampton.<\/strong><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Since the birth of the network, a variety of events have been organised and delivered for UGs, PGTs, PGRs and early career female researchers. Theano\u2019s events aim to:<\/p>\n

\u2666\u00a0 Provide informal mentoring support to all members to deal with their stress or enhance the relationship with their colleagues\/managers, so they can achieve their full potential. Examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Overcoming barriers to an active life<\/li>\n
  • Secrets of a stress free life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u2666\u00a0 Build strong fem\"\"ale networks and bring together women from all the different faculties and academic units at the University of Southampton. The Network believes that learning and exchanging knowledge can be achieved through fun activities. Therefore, throughout the whole academic year Theano organizes different events such as Movie night, Bowling night, Quiz night, Board games night and Lose Weight and get in shape. One of the most successful events that we ran used a game that is based on a famous TV show called “Would I Lie to You”. The\u00a0game was used to reveal secrets about different cultures, deal with culture shock, improve our cross-cultural communication and spend the evening screaming with laughter. At the beginning of each academic year,\u00a0\"\"Theano organises a welcome event for all new female members.<\/p>\n

    \u2666\u00a0 Improve the leadership status of females in their selected fields. In 2014 we partnered with Innovate UK to run a workshop on “Technology Needs Women”. The event gave the delegates the opportunity to hear from women successfully\u00a0making returns to their careers, and to gather information on how to access potential roles\u00a0in the high-tech sectors such as ICT, Science, Engineering and others enabled by technology. Other events included how to present ideas, innovation excellence, team building exercises and the value of women in leadership roles.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/p>\n

    \u2666\u00a0 Develop skills, cultivate professional and strategic relationships and provide inspiration. Some of our recent guest speakers include: Professor Nicola Woodroofe, head of biomolecular science research center at Sheffield Hallam University and Dr. Melora Larson from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).<\/p>\n

    \u2666\u00a0 Provide a crucial platform for women to meet people from industry, gain insight on how things work inside their companies and understand the recruitment process. Each year Theano runs a big event titled \u201cEngineering, science and technology career expo for female students\u201d. Attendees get a chance to find out about the companies, their career opportunities, understand the recruitment process and progression routes. This is achieved through a mixture of presentations, panel discussions and a speed networking event featuring some of the top companies that have recruited female engineers and scientists in the last couple of years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
