{"id":968,"date":"2013-05-28T15:14:25","date_gmt":"2013-05-28T15:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/?p=968"},"modified":"2013-05-28T15:14:25","modified_gmt":"2013-05-28T15:14:25","slug":"underwater-reflectance-transformation-imaging-a-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/test-media\/2013\/05\/28\/underwater-reflectance-transformation-imaging-a-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Underwater Reflectance Transformation Imaging&#8230;a success."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been working on Reflectance Transformation Image capture in a sub-aquatic environment. \u00a0On 2 May, 2013 the first ever\u00a0PTM file from an RTI dataset captured entirely underwater was successfully processed in the Archaeological Computing Research Group computer lab at the University of Southampton using RTIBuilder software.\u00a0\u00a0 Images were captured in 1.5 meters of water at the campus Jubilee pool using a common 12mpix digital camera and a 15 watt 1000 lumen HID dive-light.\u00a0 The object photographed was a chunk of 18<sup>th<\/sup> century wooden ship \u2018deadeye\u2019 rig blocking found in the Itchen River in downtown Southampton.\u00a0 \u00a0The experiment was the first in a research design I\u2019ve authored to\u00a0assess the viability of \u00a0\u2018Underwater RTI\u2019\u2026or what I\u2019ve dubbed \u2018URTI\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0 Approximately 1540 photographs were taken over a 3-hour period in the pool.\u00a0\u00a0 The light radius was controlled by a piece of string spinning freely under the object via a heavy steal cylinder, and arc positions (4-6 per section, 13 sections) were entirely free-handed. \u00a0\u00a0Seven independent sets of data were captured, and although only one of the sets produced acceptable results, the experiment proved the viability of RTI underwater.\u00a0 \u00a0Further research is forthcoming to continue the viability of RTI as an underwater diagnostic tool.\u00a0 This summer I will be conducting baseline feasibility studies for the further development of technology and methodology in support of Reflectance Transformation Imaging in sub-aquatic environments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_974\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-974\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/blog\/2013\/05\/underwater-reflectance-transformation-imaging-a-success\/attachment\/dave-notes-change\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-974\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-974\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/files\/2013\/05\/Dave-Notes-change-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-974\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Selmo notes camera settings and lighting configuration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<dl>\n<dt><\/dt>\n<dd>\u00a0<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<figure id=\"attachment_976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-976\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/blog\/2013\/05\/underwater-reflectance-transformation-imaging-a-success\/attachment\/pool-session-1-702\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-976\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-976\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/files\/2013\/05\/Pool-Session-1-702-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raw image capture from &#8216;set 4 of 7&#8217;
