{"id":1310,"date":"2014-07-01T10:07:17","date_gmt":"2014-07-01T10:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/?p=1310"},"modified":"2014-07-01T10:07:17","modified_gmt":"2014-07-01T10:07:17","slug":"free-online-maritime-archaeology-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/test-media\/2014\/07\/01\/free-online-maritime-archaeology-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Free Online Maritime Archaeology Course"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/files\/2014\/07\/Shipwrecks-and-Submerged-poster.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1318\" alt=\"Shipwrecks-and-Submerged poster\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.soton.ac.uk\/cma\/files\/2014\/07\/Shipwrecks-and-Submerged-poster-466x250.jpeg\" width=\"466\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Registration is now open for<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/shipwrecks\" target=\"_blank\"> Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0 a free four week online course\u00a0offered in conjunction with\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FutureLearn<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0starting on the 6th October 2014.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shipwrecks and Submerged Worlds<\/em> gives you a unique opportunity \u00a0to gain an insight into the fascinating world of maritime archaeology, in an open access and engaging format.\u00a0Drawing on the expertise of the staff and students of the\u00a0Centre for Maritime Archaeology, participants will be guided through humanity\u2019s changing relationship with the world\u2019s oceans and seas over the\u00a0<a title=\"Human evolution\" href=\"http:\/\/humanorigins.si.edu\/evidence\/human-evolution-timeline-interactive\" target=\"_blank\">last 2.5 million years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We will discuss the impact of changing sea-levels on the geography of our planet and the legacy they may have left behind in myths and legends of\u00a0<a title=\"Pavalopetri\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-15191614\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantis<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Lyonesse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cismas.org.uk\/lyonesse.php\" target=\"_blank\">Lyonesse;\u00a0<\/a>the development of seafaring technologies; and the emergence of globalised economies. We will explore the traditions of seafaring that gave birth to such diverse historical and social phenomena as\u00a0<a title=\"Polynesian exploration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wayfinders\/polynesian3.html\" target=\"_blank\">Polynesian exploration<\/a>\u00a0and colonisation,\u00a0<a title=\"Viking seafaring\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Viking<\/a>\u00a0age expansion, the\u00a0\u2018<a title=\"The age of sail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rmg.co.uk\/explore\/sea-and-ships\/facts\/ships-and-seafarers\/life-at-sea-in-the-age-of-sail\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Age of Sail<\/a>\u2019 and\u00a0<a title=\"Piracy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.virginia.edu\/colp\/pdf\/Piracy-and-Maritime-Crime-NWC-2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">piracy<\/a>. We will examine the transformative impact that levels of preservation found on wrecks such as the\u00a0<em><a title=\"Mary Rose\" href=\"http:\/\/www.maryrose.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Rose<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<a title=\"The Vasa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vasamuseet.se\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Vasa<\/em><\/a>\u00a0have had on our understanding of past\u00a0societies, through to what can be learned from more\u00a0modern maritime sites such as the\u00a0<a title=\"The Titanic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/titanic\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Titanic<\/em><\/a>. The science and technology behind data collection will be explained, from diver based research to cutting edge remote sensing techniques. We\u2019ll also consider the key questions and that continue to challenge researchers today and shape the future direction of the discipline.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you are a student wanting a taster of our archaeology degrees or a lifelong learner with a passion for our oceans, we\u2019ll introduce this exciting discipline to you in an accessible way. The course is suitable for anyone and there is no need for any previous experience.
