Who we are (new)

The Science and Engineering South (SES) alliance is the most powerful hub of  universities in the UK for research in science and engineering (Cambridge, Oxford, Southampton, Imperial College London and University College London).

For example, SES institutions:

  • Submitted 18% of the whole UK sector’s research activity to REF2014.
  • Have about 25% of all EPSRC awards and 30% of the STFC national commitment.Who we are
  • Had 99% of their research environments and 93% of their research impact judged world-leading and internationally excellent in REF 2014.

SES delivers on a number of RCUK priority areas, e.g.:

  • Stimulating and facilitating engagement with different universities across different regions.
  • Maximising mutual benefit from scarce and costly research infrastructure and people.

Our Achievements

We are committed to

  • Delivering positive impact through harnessing the collective insights and resources of its members.
  • Stimulating further regional, national and international synergies in the physical sciences, bio-sciences and engineering fields whilst engaging industry to promote economic growth.
  • Being an important driver of the regional economy and city networks.

SES has developed strongly and positively. After only 2 years it has RCUK, BIS and HEFCE profile not least in terms of HPC and equipment sharing. There is good collaborative working and enhanced confidence in sharing ideas and resources.
