The Southampton Women’s Survey have underpinned a great deal of our research at the MRC LEC, allowing us to understand the factors that influence health and the mechanisms that link them with disease. The findings of the study have influenced policy in the UK and internationally with an increased understanding of and focus on preconception health. In the UK, for example, the report of the Chief Medical Officer in 2014 related to the health of women and emphasised the importance of preconception health and interest in the area has grown considerably since then.
