‘Inspiring’ and ‘fascinating’ were just some of the words used to describe a University event aimed at showcasing the importance of sustainability and fashion.
Staged by Winchester School of Art (WSA) at the Westside Lecture Theatre, the Fashion and Sustainability Forum drew an audience of staff and students to hear speakers and network with leading lights in the field.
Organised by WSA’s Delia Crowe (MA Fashion Design, 2012), Senior Teaching Fellow, and Reem Alasadi, MA Coordinator, the day featured fashion designers and editors who all share a passion for fashion, which is more ecologically sound.
Among those speaking was Caryn Franklin MBE, the television presenter and a co-editor of i-D magazine, who addressed the audience on her experiences.
Other speakers included: textile designer, Mo Tomaney, specialising in transparency and responsibility in the supply chain; Deborah Campbell, founder of Deborah Campbell Atelier women’s wear label; and Orsola De Castro, founder of Fashion Revolution and Esthetica at London Fashion Week.
The theme of the day posed the question of how to address the problem of sustainability in an age where images, adverts and celebrities promote the message that our lives will be improved by more consumption and more belongings.
Along with the opportunity to network over lunch and after-forum drinks, guests also enjoyed The Interim Exhibition, which showcased MA students’ work in progress, and included many pieces from Re:Design, a non-waste, sustainable project led by Reem.
