For many 2016 was a year of change, and at the University we continued to have much to celebrate as students and staff excelled on both the national and international stage.
In order to showcase our 2016 highlights, a short video was produced so that the achievements and successes of the year could be enjoyed by the University community and beyond.
It was a year which saw the University celebrate the successes of 9,500 students who graduated and continue their Southampton journey as part of our global alumni community. It was also one which welcomed undergraduates beginning their higher education journeys.
A significant ceremony was held at the University’s Malaysian Campus where our first cohort of engineering students celebrated their Graduation.
University students also performed well on the national stage by securing awards in fields as diverse as nursing, the arts, medicine and chemistry.
We also had the honour of welcoming two royal visitors last year with both HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and HRH The Duke of Kent visiting the University to see the impact our research is having across the globe.
Our alumni continued to achieve world-class success with sailor Giles Scott (BSc Geography and Geology, 2008) striking gold in Rio in the Finn class. We also welcomed back journalist and broadcaster Jon Sopel (BSc Politics and Sociology, 1981) in a more formal capacity as he was appointed Pro-Chancellor at the winter graduation ceremony.
Groundbreaking research by University academics hit the headlines around the world with advances including turning CO2 into rock, developments in 5D crystal digital data storage and discovering 40 shipwrecks in the Black Sea attracting national and international press coverage.
The highlights video also documented the progress we are making in building the UK’s first Centre for Cancer Immunology which is on course to open next year.
