The University of Southampton has enjoyed success in two recent rankings, maintaining its position as one of the top 90 institutions in the world.
In the QS World University Rankings 2016, Southampton placed 87 out of 916 universities ranked. Compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds, Southampton also placed 17 out of 73 UK universities who made the table.
The QS rankings are based on a range of indicators which focus on excellence in teaching and research, the reputation of universities among employers and fellow academics, and the international mix of students and staff.
Over 70,000 academics and 40,000 employers contributed their views to shape the rankings, with over 11 million research papers and 40 million citations reviewed and analysed.
Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said:
Among the main principles of the University’s strategy are quality and internationalisation. Against this backdrop, it is encouraging to see our University maintain its position in the top 100 overall, as evidence of our reputation and status as a globally-focused institution.
The University also features in the top 100 in the world among specific subject areas ranked by the Times Higher Education (THE) for 2016-17. The publication’s rankings by subject are based on criteria including teaching, international outlook, research, citations and industry outcome.
Southampton is 54th in the world for computer science, a new subject ranking for the THE this year, which places the University 7th among UK universities and 19th in Europe. The University also places 77th for physical sciences (10th in the UK, 29th in Europe) and 92nd for engineering and technology (9th in the UK, 25th in Europe).
