The University is now helping to support student and academic projects through its very own crowdfunding platform.
Crowdfunding is a form of fundraising that relies on many small donations from a large number of people. Our online platform makes it easy for you to donate directly to specific projects that interest you.
Launched in October 2014 the platform has raised over £13,000 for 11 projects that enhance and expand upon students’ learning through the extra curricular activities they are involved in outside of their studies. From taking our very talented student drama groups to the Edinburgh Fringe, to charitable ventures taking place all over the world, crowdfunding is an excellent way for our students and academics to source additional funding for the projects they are most passionate about.
The platform’s most recent project, Fidel the Musical is a collaborative project that invites students from across the UK to write and submit their own music to create an educational production about the life of one of history’s most controversial political figures.
Inspired by the largely untold story of the Cuban leader’s rise to power, and the drama and excitement of this period of the country’s history, Associate Professor Denise Baden, of the University’s Business School, saw an opportunity to work with students, staff and local businesses to create an engaging new theatrical experience.
With a donation of £5 or more to the project, you have the opportunity to be involved in the judging of musical entries, making your own mark on the development of the final production. Other exciting rewards are on offer depending on the amount you choose to donate.
Overall the project aims to raise £10,000 to fund development workshops at the Mayflower Theatre to bring this vibrant and exciting musical to fruition.
Along with this project, our Enactus team is raising funds to send the team to Johannesburg to attend the Enactus World Cup where they will represent the UK as they look to place as the number one team in the world for student entrepreneurship, and the University’s road cycling society is raising funds to help pay for a new bicycle maintenance stand and pump at the Highfield campus.
