Alumnus Abhijit Shrestha (BSc Maths with Actuarial Studies, 2006) has been doing voluntary work to help the victims of two major earthquakes in Nepal that caused widespread destruction in April and May of this year. The earthquakes had a combined death toll of over 9,000, and made hundreds of thousands homeless.
Abhijit, originally from Kathmandu, volunteered as part of a local group, helping to build temporary shelters and set up a medical camp in Nuwakot, a village that was badly affected by the disaster. It was estimated that ninety per cent of the houses in the village were severely damaged in the earthquake. The group also assisted several other villages around the capital.

Jeremy Krause (Geography, 1972) was made an Honorary member of The Geographical Association (GA) at the annual conference held at The University of Manchester in April 2015.
Jeremy’s Honorary membership was granted in recognition of his work in support of the GA, as a former President, member of the Governing Body and several other roles, which he held over a period stretching over 45 years from his school days as a student in London.
Jeremy passes on his thanks to those in the Geography Department at The University of Southampton for helping him on his way.

Pamela Galloway (1951) contacted us to say that, at 93, she believed she must be one of the oldest readers of our alumni magazine, adding that though she has been retired almost 29 years, she is still very active in Labour Party politics and community organisations.
She would love to hear news of any others who were on the course with Freda Young as Head of Department.

Guy Blythman (BA History, 1986) has recently published a new book, Philosophy: A View from the Edge. He describes it as:
“an overview, intended to be comprehensible to the layperson, of the major philosophical issues by a non-academic philosopher, the aim of which is to show that such people can have pertinent views on the subject. It might be considered challenging and radical in parts, and particularly in its rejection of the idea that material science is the only useful way of understanding the universe.”

Ben Thompson (BSc Physics, 1996) is organising a reunion event for physicists from the graduating years of 1996 and 1997. He says:
“Perhaps you remember hanging out in the Physics library rushing to get assignments finished, or sharing time in the labs running laser, astronomy or quantum electro dynamics experiments.
Maybe it was the camaraderie or the Student Union bars, life in halls or the streets of Portswood and beyond that triggers a moment reminiscing.
Whatever jogs your memory, we hope you’d like to come along and share your adventures with other alums.”
