In May 2019 Dr Eleanor Wilkinson and Dr Iliana Ortega–AlcĂĄzar ran a policy event at the House of Commons, to launch their new report, Housing benefit and age discrimination: Young women living in shared accommodation in the private rental sector. https://www.youngwomenstrust.org/housing_benefit_age_discrimination
The report is based on ESRC funded research, and was produced in collaboration with the Young Womenâs Trust [https://www.youngwomenstrust.org/], a charity that supports young women (aged 18-30) who are living on low incomes. The report outlines how housing welfare reform has led to a lack of safe and secure housing for young vulnerable women. The event was hosted by Labour MP Siobhain McDonagh, and included speakers from two leading homelessness organizations, Crisis and Centrepoint. The findings from the report generated wide media interest, and was covered in The Telegraphand the Huffington Post, among others.
Dr Wilkinson will be speaking at another policy event hosted by the Young Womenâs Trust this October in London titled âSolving the Crisis in Young Women’s Housingâ https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/solving-the-crisis-in-young-womens-housing-registration-73108580733
