{"id":945,"date":"2019-01-02T22:55:24","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T22:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/skywritings\/?p=945"},"modified":"2019-01-02T22:55:24","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T22:55:24","slug":"dance-bear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/skywritings\/2019\/01\/02\/dance-bear\/","title":{"rendered":"Dance Bear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img width='390' height='239' border='0' hspace='5' align='right' src='\/~totl\/skywritings\/uploads\/dancebear.jpg' alt='' \/>Saw a TV program about Dancing Bears<br \/>\nin Turkey.<br \/>\nChildren are delighted<br \/>\nto watch these big, surprisingly light-footed beasts<br \/>\ndo a jig<br \/>\nas their eyes roll lovingly,<br \/>\nalmost passionately,<br \/>\ntoward their human partners<br \/>\n(&#8220;Roms,&#8221; as gypsies prefer to be called)<br \/>\nholding the rope<br \/>\nthat leads to their nose. <\/p>\n<p>It never enters the children&#8217;s mind<br \/>\nthat the dancing bear<br \/>\ncould be anything but happy,<br \/>\njust as they are,<br \/>\nin watching it.<br \/>\nAfter all,<br \/>\nwould their parents bring them<br \/>\nto watch a horribly cruel display<br \/>\nof torture?<br \/>\ncould the gay rhythm to which they dance<br \/>\npossibly be that of unrelenting, excruciating tugs<br \/>\nto the nose-ring, tongue-ring, jaw?<br \/>\nand could what the bear goes through<br \/>\nin their presence<br \/>\nconceivably be only a small glimpse<br \/>\nof its agony?<br \/>\nYes, they wonder<br \/>\nwhy the bear&#8217;s nose<br \/>\nhas that funny curve,<br \/>\nand why its jaw is askew<br \/>\nand permanently agape,<br \/>\nand why its frothy breath<br \/>\nis crimson,<br \/>\nbut they assume it&#8217;s just smiling.<\/p>\n<p>So Turkey has finally,<br \/>\nofficially,<br \/>\nbanned the practice &#8212;<br \/>\nwhich has not made it disappear,<br \/>\nof course,<br \/>\nbut has simply made it more profitable<br \/>\nto cater to a new demand,<br \/>\nin which the bear cub is duly purchased,<br \/>\ndisfigured, tortured, displayed,<br \/>\nand then sold to animal-welfare activists,<br \/>\nwho take it to a retirement farm<br \/>\nwhile the Rom re-invests part of his profits<br \/>\nin the next bear cub.<br \/>\nSupply and demand.<br \/>\nMarket economics.<\/p>\n<p>They say that the nose ring<br \/>\nthe world has placed in the Rom people&#8217;s noses<br \/>\nis almost as painful as the bear&#8217;s.<br \/>\nBut that&#8217;s hard to credit,<br \/>\nfrom the bear&#8217;s end of the rope&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saw a TV program about Dancing Bears in Turkey.
