{"id":2058,"date":"2023-12-17T21:40:33","date_gmt":"2023-12-17T21:40:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/skywritings\/?p=2058"},"modified":"2023-12-17T21:49:04","modified_gmt":"2023-12-17T21:49:04","slug":"body-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/skywritings\/2023\/12\/17\/body-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Body Awareness&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2023\/12\/15\/body-awareness-scientists-give-robots-a-basic-sense-of-proprioception\/\">Body Awareness: Scientists: Give Robots a Basic Sense of \u2018Proprioception<\/a>\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving a robot a body with the sensorimotor capacities needed to ground its words in its sensorimotor capacity to pick out and interact with the referents of its words in the world is&nbsp;<strong><em>grounding<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that is completely (completely) trivial at&nbsp;<strong>toy-scale.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No \u201cgrounds\u201d whatsoever to talk about \u201cbody awareness\u201d there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would only kick in \u2013 (if dopamine etc. is not needed too) &#8212; at&nbsp;<strong>Turing-scale<\/strong>&nbsp;for robotic capacities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if those include human language-learning capacity, that would pretty much have to be at LLM-scale too (not Siri-scale).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now here\u2019s the rub (and if you miss it, or dismiss it, we are talking past one another):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no way to ground an LLM\u00a0<strong>top-down,<\/strong>\u00a0dropping connections from individual words to their sensorimotor referents (like a man-o-war jelly-fish).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only way to \u201calign\u201d sensorimotor grounding with the referents of words is&nbsp;<strong>bottom-up,<\/strong>&nbsp;from the ground)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That does not mean every word has to be robotically&nbsp;<strong>grounded&nbsp;<em>directly<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once at least one&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/tops.12211\">Minimal Grounding Set (Minset)<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>has been grounded directly (i.e., robotically) then (assuming the robot has the capacity for propositions too &#8212; not just for directly naming everything) all the rest of LLM-space can be&nbsp;<strong>grounded indirectly&nbsp;<\/strong>by verbal definition or description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything is reachable indirectly by words, once you have a grounded Minset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>But that all has to be done bottom-up too.<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/c3\/Portuguese_Man-O-War_%28Physalia_physalis%29.jpg\/440px-Portuguese_Man-O-War_%28Physalia_physalis%29.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Body Awareness: Scientists: Give Robots a Basic Sense of \u2018Proprioception\u2019 Giving a robot a body with the sensorimotor capacities needed to ground its words in its sensorimotor capacity to pick out and interact with the referents of its words in the world is&nbsp;grounding.
