Some wrongs are obvious, if you just <em>look<\/em>; and what needs \u201cimproving\u201d is human behavior, not measurements.<\/big><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><\/p><p>&#8220;ignorance and apathy perpetuates the moral relativism typical of modern agricultural systems&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><big>The ignorance, apathy and moral relativism are those of individual human cerebra, not \u201csystems,\u201d which feel nothing.<\/big><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><\/p><p><em>&#8220;I think I can do more for animal welfare working from a complex adaptive system approach than by doing what they call &#8216;research on welfare&#8217;&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/p><p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<big><p>Let us cut to the quick on this: Are you a vegan activist? <\/p><\/big>\n\n\n\n<big><p>If not, your disposition toward \u201cmeasuring\u201d a \u201ccomplex adaptive system\u201d &#8212; in place of ceasing to harm animals and devoting yourself to inspiring everyone else to do likewise &#8212; is just <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rep.routledge.com\/articles\/thematic\/akrasia\/v-1\">cognitive dissonance<\/a><\/em> (which is itself worthy of measuring and modelling: but it always transpires in individual human cerebra, not in \u201ccomplex adaptive systems\u201d &#8212; which, again, are not sentient).   <\/p><\/big>\n\n\n\n<p><big>(I will come back to \u201cresearch on welfare\u201d at the end.) <\/big><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><\/p><p>&#8220;&#8230; the utilitarian conception of life throughout time and&#8230; its foundations&#8230; for western civilizations&#8230; Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Rousseau, James George Frazer&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<big><p>Utilitarianism is<em> counting<\/em>. Just counting. Machines can count. But machines are not sentient. \u201cWelfare\u201d is a sanitized, self-deluding word. The right word is <em>suffering<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p><\/big>\n\n\n\n<p><big>Utilitarians can say \u201cmeasure and minimize suffering\u201d &#8212; as if&nbsp; most of it were not obvious. But if utilitarians can theorize (\u201cmeasure and model\u201d) while munching on the leg of a lamb, they are simply engaging in a pious exercise in cognitive dissonance.<\/big><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><\/p><p><em>&#8220;If you think this rudimentary idea is a waste of your time, please let me know, as the only thing I want to know is whether I am wrong&#8230;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<big><p>This is not about the rightness or wrongness of a complex theory about a complex system but the rightness or wrongness of <em>actions<\/em> &#8212; which, in the case of what is being done to countless sentient organisms by our \u201ccomplex agricultural system\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thevegancalculator.com\/animal-slaughter\/\">every second of every minute of every day<\/a>, everywhere in the \u201canthropocene,\u201d is pre-theoretically and a-theoretically obvious <a href=\"https:\/\/generic.wordpress.soton.ac.uk\/skywritings\/2019\/01\/06\/strategy-proposal-for-global-transition-to-non-animal-alternatives\/\">to anyone who <em>looks<\/em><\/a>.<\/p><\/big>\n\n\n\n<big><p>(Which is why I think that what is needed is to <em>look<\/em>, not just to count. Just counting &#8212; \u201cmeasure and minimize suffering\u201d &#8212; takes the \u201csystem\u201d for granted, and tries to \u201cimprove\u201d it. That is \u201c<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.esdaw.eu\/animal-welfarism.html\">welfarism<\/a>&#8220;<\/em>: &#8220;Keep on using and killing animals, but try to hurt them less.\u201d And that, in turn, is again just <em>cognitive dissonance<\/em>.)<\/p><\/big>\n\n\n\n<p><big>I hope that while you keep measuring, you will keep thinking, and looking.
