As Science is mere structured common sense<\/a>,
\nher means but trial-and-error made intense,
\nthe only virtue setting her apart,
\nand raising her above (some think) mere Art,
\n    Is her convergence ever on consensus:
\n    collective, self-corrective her defenses.
\nA flagellant, she boldly does defy
\nReality her schemes to falsify.<\/p>\n

And yet this noble jousting were in vain,
\nand all this pain would yield no grain of gain
\n    if Science were content, a shrinking violet,
\n    her works from all the world e\u2018er to keep private.
\n    Instead, performance public and artistic,
\n    restraining all propensities autistic,
\nperhaps less out of error-making dread,
\nthan banal need to earn her daily bread.<\/p>\n

For showbiz being what it is today,
\nwork\u2019s not enough, you\u2019ve got to make it pay.
\n    What ratings, sweeps and polls count for our actors,
\n    no less than our elected benefactors,
\n    for Science the commensurate equation
\n    is not just publication but citation.
\nThe more your work is accessed, read and used,
\nthe higher then is reckoned its just dues.
\n    Sounds crass, but there may be some consolation,
\n    where there\u2019s still some residual motivation
\nto make a difference, not just make a fee:
\nthe World Wide Web at last can make Science free<\/a>.<\/p>\n
