Translating a question or an assignment, into a search strategy or statement is an important first step in tracking down the information you need. Developing a search strategy starts by you thinking about the kinds of words related to your topic that you might expect to find in books or in journal articles. You can use a good search statement to search a variety of sources, including databases and library catalogues.<\/p>\n<p>Before starting your review, you will need to identify library resources to help you with your search. Your search will be more comprehensive than searching your favourite search engine.<\/p>\n<p>This Resources Evaluation tutorial called \u2018Beyond Google\u2019 will explain why.<\/p>\n<p>You will need your university username and password. One single subject heading is used to describe a concept, e.g. stroke for cerebrovascular accident or CVA. This means you don&#8217;t need to worry about variation in spelling or jargon.<\/p>\n<p>Using subject headings usually means you will find more relevant results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, not all concepts neatly fit a subject heading, so you may have to do a combination of free text searching and subject headings.<\/p>\n<p>Watch this 6 minute tutorial to help you decide if you need to use subject heading\/thesaurus searching. They are usually designed by information specialists and you might also hear them referred to as &#8216;hedges&#8217; or search blocks.<\/p>\n<p>You should cite any search filters that you incorporate in your searches, giving credit to the original creator. Use the \u2018webpage\u2019 type in your <a href=\"https:\/\/library.soton.ac.uk\/sash\/referencing\">referencing style<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/york.ac.uk\/issg-search-filters-resource\/home\">The ISSG Search Filters Resource<\/a> provides access to search filters for specific study designs (e.g. mixed methods studies, qualitative research) and focus (e.g. artificial intelligence and software tools, population group and gender-specific filters).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/deakin.libguides.com\/systematicreview\/filters\">Deakin University Library<\/a> offers useful guidance on finding, using, editing and evaluating search filters.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.ualberta.ca\/c.php?g=734066&#038;p=5281325\">The University of Alberta Library<\/a> has created a range of search filters covering health, populations, geography and Indigenous Peoples.<\/li>\n<li>Google is useful for finding filters: search for \u201csearch filter\u201d and your subject term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Always critically appraise any search filters before using them.<\/p>\n<p>Check which database a search filter has been designed for. The syntax each database uses differs, so a search filter created for Scopus will not work in Web of Science.<\/p>\n<h3>Case study<\/h3>\n<p>Morgan is researching Indigenous Peoples and cultural stereotypes. They are specifically interested in New Zealand, and use the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/york.ac.uk\/issg-search-filters-resource\/home\">ISSG Search Filters Resource<\/a> \u00a0to select \u2018population-specific\u2019. One single subject heading is used to describe a concept, e.g. stroke for cerebrovascular accident or CVA. They are usually designed by information specialists and you might also hear them referred to as 'hedges' or search blocks.<\/p> <p>You should cite any search filters that you incorporate in your searches, giving credit to the original creator. Use the \u2018webpage\u2019 type in your <a href=\"https:\/\/library.soton.ac.uk\/sash\/referencing\">referencing style<\/a>.<\/p> <ul> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/york.ac.uk\/issg-search-filters-resource\/home\">The ISSG Search Filters Resource<\/a> provides access to search filters for specific study designs (e.g. mixed methods studies, qualitative research) and focus (e.g. artificial intelligence and software tools, population group and gender-specific filters).<\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/deakin.libguides.com\/systematicreview\/filters\">Deakin University Library<\/a> offers useful guidance on finding, using, editing and evaluating search filters.<\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.ualberta.ca\/c.php?g=734066&amp;p=5281325\">The University of Alberta Library<\/a> has created a range of search filters covering health, populations, geography and Indigenous Peoples.<\/li> <li>Google is useful for finding filters: search for \u201csearch filter\u201d and your subject term.<\/li> <\/ul> <p>Always critically appraise any search filters before using them.<\/p> <p>Check which database a search filter has been designed for. The syntax each database uses differs, so a search filter created for Scopus will not work in Web of Science.<\/p> <h3>Case study<\/h3> <p>Morgan is researching Indigenous Peoples and cultural stereotypes. They are specifically interested in New Zealand, and use the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/york.ac.uk\/issg-search-filters-resource\/home\">ISSG Search Filters Resource<\/a> \u00a0to select \u2018population-specific\u2019.
